The recently updated HHS Gymnasium

Skylar Tait, Staff Writer

Here at Hawthorne High School there is a different gym teacher for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Ms. Jaclyn Peene teaches the freshman gym classes and she says, “I absolutely love teaching the freshman!” Every gym teacher runs their gym class just a little bit different, but there are similarities as well. Peene explained exactly how she runs her classes, by saying, “The kids change into their gym clothes. Then as soon as the students enter the gym they sit in their squads. After I take attendance a different student leads the warm-ups every day. After warm-ups the kids sit on the sidelines so I can explain what sport or activity we are playing that day. After the directions are given, and everyone understands what they are doing, we start the activity. At the end of class I give the students feedback on how they did and what they can do to improve. Then I send them down to the locker rooms to get changed.”

Mr. Paul Wojciechowski (Woj) teaches the sophomore class. He runs his class just like Ms.Peene does except in his class students don’t have to lead the warm-ups, he leads them. Katelyn Moro, a sophomore said, “Woj is my favorite because he knows what he’s doing and really cares about his students.” Julia Aguero also said, “Woj is my favorite so far, and his class makes me look forward to running or any sporting activity.”

Joe Letterese (or “L”) teaches the junior class. He runs his class just like Woj except some people say he’s a bit more strict. Hannah Tait, a junior said, “L loves pushing his students to their fullest ability.” Matt Garrison, a senior, added, “L is a fun teacher who is enthusiastic about the games we play and he really cares about the students and their ability to learn new sports.”

Allison Gerdes teaches the seniors. She runs her class just like Mr.L and Mr.Woj. She has the same routine as them and she leads the warm-up, not the students. Tim Matthews states,  “I like senior gym because of the specific sports we played so far…Ms. G also cares about all of us on a personal level because she’s known us all for four years because she is our class advisor.”
