Guest: Marine Biology
February 12, 2016
Mrs. Marissa Wentworth, teacher of marine biology here at Hawthorne High School, had a guest speaker come to her class on Wednesday, January 20.
Rebecca Shell came and spoke to junior students about how marine invertebrates form and function. Shell brought along her own invertebrates models for the students to see. She talked about why invertebrates have different attributes and similarities within the families, so she had many specimens for the students to observe.
Some of the models included a Portuguese man-of-war, shrimp, marine worms, lobsters, and deep sea marine spiders.
When talking about her experience with Shell, Mrs. Wentworth said, “Rebecca Shell gave provided the students with a great experience because they were able to see specimens up close…many that they have never seen before. They were also able to see what opportunities there are with a career in marine biology.”
