Andrew Gomez is a freshman in Hawthorne High School who used to be the exact opposite of the way you see him today. He knows what it is like to go through the insecurities of life, such as being bullied and going through depression. But ever since going to a youth group retreat in the beginning of sixth grade, his life has changed. Now, he really wants others who are going through the same things he has experienced to have hope. He wants to awaken people to their purpose in life. In 2015, he discovered that one of those ways was through rap.

In his songs, Andrew expresses his past and how he’s not ashamed to live out his purpose and share his faith with others. Andrew wants people to know, through his life story and his raps, that your personality can turn around so much, you won’t even look the way you used to be. Andrew says, “One of the best songs, and one I hold very dear to my heart, has been inspired by that time of my life where I was bullied and insecure…But I don’t only talk about what I’ve been through and who I used to be before; I talk about what changed my life, and that the same can happen for you. When I told my friend about my past, she couldn’t believe it. But then I showed her the lyrics to the song, and when she finished reading it, she was close to crying.”

Rather than rapping about money and the other dissatisfying temporary pleasures that most of the other very famous rappers do, Andrew instead raps not only about how he received his purpose and how you can find yours, but also how he is living it out. He expresses that the joy he has is better than anything else in the world. Andrew says that some of his songs describe who he is and the journey of life he walks through. In his song, The Road, the chorus says, “Every day I go down this road. Every day I see all this pain… I will be bold. I won’t be ashamed.” He says, “I don’t care what others think of me. I don’t even care if I don’t fit in. Bringing awakening to people so that they can be changed and saved is all I care about.”

Now, Andrew is working on an album. HHS’s very own John Parcells and Jason Melendez will be featured on one of the songs. Andrew’s best friends, “Golden” and Matt Mora, who kicked off a small independent record label called “Body Music” for themselves and Andrew, will be featured as well. Be sure to ask Andrew about what he is up to next, so you don’t miss his upcoming music!
