Science League is Back

The Science League is back.

Hawthorne High School science teacher, Victor Wu, has revived the school club that has been nonoperational for so long. The Science League has existed in the past at HHS, but has not been available to students for some time.

Science league is an after school club where students compete against students from others schools using the knowledge they have learned in their science courses so far. For example, if a student is currently taking Physics they will compete against other students who are also taking Physics. The teams consist of a maximum of 4 students and 1 team per subject is allowed.

The students compete by taking a timed test consisting of multiple choice questions. After time is up, the tests are scored based on a 100 point system. The questions are based on topics that the students have already learned or are currently learning about. The top two scores from each team are added together and is the school’s score in that subject. The competitions take place once a month at various schools in the area.

This month’s competition took place at Glen Rock High School. Mr. Wu took a total of two teams, one for Chemistry and one for Physics. The students that participated included, Michael Rica, Patrick Olah, Aidan Harmer, Daniel Sweetman, Christian Balbuena, and Connor Henderson. The Physics Team took second place out of 5 teams and the chemistry team took fourth out of 5 teams.

“Not too bad for a first time, with no prior preparation.” said Mr. Wu.

This is just the beginning of what is to come from the new club and we look forward to next month’s competition which will take place in Lodi.
