Head Start On Our Careers: Future Teachers

Abby Reicher, Staff Writer

Teachers evolve from everywhere with different backgrounds and different opinions about the education process. Teachers influence young people’s lives on a daily basis and are the real superheroes in the world. Some students at the high school level want to pursue a career as teachers.

In Hawthorne High School, there is a class called Future Teachers and a second year course called Tomorrow’s Teachers. They go hand in hand with each other. With this class, the students participate in many activities including future teacher conferences, going to the elementary schools, and interacting with other students who desire to be a teacher as well. An additional plus with this amazing class is that the students get  real hands on experience.

Mr. Bernard Gomes teaches this intriguing career class that will set the students up for life.  He is extremely excited to see how his students take what they are learning and how they put it to use.  Students were given workbooks at the beginning of the year to guide them throughout the course.  So far the students have learned about disorders, homes of students, and bullying.  The topics that the students talk about are not always fun, but people do not always realize what you have to do to become a great teacher.

On January 9, the students in this class went to a conference at Montclair State University. During the conference, they met high school students like themselves who shared a dream of becoming teachers. At the conference, students got to choose two courses that interested them. Motivational speakers, meeting students that are the same age and have the same interest, and doing what the students love is a great combination for an educational experience that will help with many students’ futures.
