HHS Alum Martin Van Treuren Takes On His Next Big Role

Jenna Ventrice, Staff Writer

Martin Van Treuren is a professional actor who just so happened to have once walked the very halls of Hawthorne High School.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Van Treuren expanded his passion for theater by participating in several HHS productions, such as Oliver, Carousel, Charlie’s Aunt, King and I, The Variety Show, and The Wizard of Oz. After high school, he then attended Montclair State University and majored in theater and speech. Since graduating from Montclair, Van Treuren has been cast in numerous on and off-Broadway productions, such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas. A Christmas Carol, Singin’ in the Rain, and, perhaps one of his most successful productions, Jekyll & Hyde.

Van Treuren next big role occurred in March of this year. The Barrow Group Theatre Company brought an end to their 2017-2018 season with a revival of A Walk in the Woods, a play written by Lee Blessing. Van Treuren was cast as the career Russian diplomat, Andrey Botvinnik. The two-character play follows two diplomats, one Russian (Van Treuren) and one American, through a sequence of meetings that take place during the end of the Cold War. The show possesses a political theme that raises questions that are still relevant today.
