HHS Hitting the Ice This Winter

John Kenworthy, Staff Writer

Hawthorne High School offers many sports that everyone can participate in. Some of these sports include football, baseball, and basketball. Last year, the school even added a girl’s flag football team. But throughout the years, Hawthorne High School has never offered ice hockey to their students. That is, until now.

Last year as well as Waldwick, officially formed a co-op with Lakeland Regional High School (Ringwood and Wanaque). Lakeland has always been a power house in the Big North division winning 6 County Championships, 2 League Tournaments, and 5 League Division Championships. Their most recent championship coming in 2021 when they took home the League Division Championship. However, with the departure of an abundance of seniors, Lakeland needed more players in the program.

The Clarion has interviewed Hawthorne High School Athletic Director and Vice Principal, Art Mazzacca for more information.

The Clarion: How did the idea of a co-op with Lakeland come about?

Mr. Mazzacca: It was something that was discussed a few years back. It came back into fruition this past Spring.

The Clarion: Were there any attempts to develop a hockey team in the past?

Mr. Mazzacca: Yes and no. We had some parents ask us about adding a hockey team, but the cost was just too much for the district.

The Clarion: What schools, if any offered to co-op with Hawthorne?

Mr. Mazzacca: We’ve had opportunities in the past with West Milford and Fair Lawn, but unfortunately it never went through.

The Clarion: How long did it take to come to an agreement with Lakeland?

Mr. Mazzacca: It only took about 2 months to officially reach an agreement.

The Clarion: Do you see this team being successful?

Mr. Mazzacca: I don’t know much about hockey, but I’ve heard about how successful Lakeland’s program has been over the past couple of years and I believe our student athletes are capable of maintaining that success.

The Clarion: How long do you see this team lasting for?

Mr. Mazzacca: Well, it’s hard for me to give you a direct answer, but I can see it lasting for a while.
