What Makes a Good Teacher?

Hawthorne High School has an array of great and effective teachers. Having good educators is key to having successful and inspired students. Therefore, The Clarion asked several students this question: What makes a good teacher?

The first student asked was Angel Clemente, a sophomore here at HHS. He answered, “A good teacher is always understanding. I like when they are lenient because then I feel less pressured, but they still teach well. They shouldn’t assign too much work at once because that’s overwhelming and should have a fair grading policy.”

Sophomore Jason Naranjo answered, “Good teachers care about their students, are lenient, and nice. I like when too much work isn’t assigned because I don’t always have time to complete it.”

Sophomore Miguel Pleitez replied, “A good teacher should be understanding. I like when they don’t assign a lot of homework because I don’t have a lot of time with all of my extracurriculars.”

Senior Ameena Jatker responded, “A good teacher has to teach well. When they make the lesson interesting and engaging it helps me retain the information better.”

Lastly, Sophomore Carly Iovino said, “Good teachers are empathetic. Understanding teachers are always the best. It makes me stress so much less about the class and let me just enjoy it.”

As you can see, most of the answers were very similar. The main quality of a good teacher seems to be understanding. Don’t be too hard on students, you never know their other responsibilities.
