We’re about two months into the new school year, students are finding their rhythm and balance between academic responsibilities and sport commitments. This period often involves adjusting to new schedules, managing time efficiently, and finding strategies to succeed both in their classrooms and on the field. It’s a time for building habits that will support success throughout the rest of the school year.
The Clarion first asked Freshman Nicholas Henzel a few questions. The questions started with, “How do you balance your time as a student and athlete?” Nicholas informed us and responded “I make sure I get any work done on time.” The Clarion then asked Nicholas Henzel, “Do you ever get overwhelmed or stressed with having to do school and sports?” Nicholas replied with, “Yes, I do.” After interviewing Nicholas Henzel, from his information we can tell that if you complete your work on time and have good time management, you will be able to accomplish school and sports at the same time.
The Clarion then asked Freshman, Gwendolyn Rios, “How do you balance your time as a student and athlete?” Gwendolyn replied and said, “…it is a lot of time management. Have to have a balance between sports and being a student. I make a routine for myself everyday on how I manage everything after practices and or games.” Then Rios was asked, “Do you ever get overwhelmed or stressed with having to do school and sports?” Gwendolyn then explained, “When having sports and school on the same day it is mostly tiring from stress because stress forms when you’re laying down in bed after a long day and remembering you have a test tomorrow or homework assignments. So, I do get stressed out and overwhelmed sometimes but most of the time I do not.” Gwendolyn was lastly asked, “Do you have any tips for anyone trying to keep up with school work while having to play sports?” Gwendolyn then shared, “Honestly the main tip I have is that school always comes before sports, so focus on school and then if you want to have fun and join a sport, make sure you’re ready to put one over the other.”
The next freshman The Clarion asked questions of was Cassiel Maldonado. Cassiel was asked, “How do you balance your time as a student and athlete?” Cassiel stated, “I balance my time by staying focused in class and trying to get as much work done in class as possible.”
The last freshman that was interviewed was Haylee Paternina. Haylee was asked, “How do you balance your time as a student and athlete?” Haylee said that she usually does her homework after practice or on weekends. Haylee was then asked if she ever gets stressed or overwhelmed and what tips she has for anybody who needs to find their sports and school balance. Haylee answered, “Usually I don’t because I have gotten used to it, but sometimes having no time can be frustrating.”
In conclusion, after interviewing a few HHS freshmen, we can tell as students continue to navigate the school year, finding a balance between academics and sports comes more manageable with consistent effort and effective time management. By creating and establishing new and wonderful habits (Like staying organized) they can achieve success in both areas, setting a strong foundation for the year.
