Did you know that Hawthorne High School held a Guinness World Record? This world record was started by our school as well, meaning HHS was the first to ever hold this record. The record we chose to break is a very interesting one indeed: and when looked into, makes sense on why we chose it.
The exact record that was started was for the most people popping bubble wrap at the same time. This happened in 2013 and HHS was the first to be acknowledged for this record. But why did we choose bubble wrap? It turns out that in 1957, Hawthorne invented bubble wrap, which is used all across the world.
This record was achieved on Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day, which is on January 27. 366 students and staff gathered in the main gym of HHS and had 2 minutes to pop over 8,000 square feet of bubble wrap with their hands and feet.
This is how we were the first to hold the record of most people popping bubble wrap at the same time. At the same time, HHS students, staff, and faculty raised money for Sandy Hook Elementary School, who had fallen victim to a shooting only a month before the event, giving this event a even bigger meaning and more of an affect on the community.
Unfortunately, HHS was surpassed the next year and the current record is held by the Boy Scouts of America in Denver Colorado. This time, 2,681 people participated on September 19, 2015 to break this record. This record has not been attempted since, but maybe someday in the future the record will be held by another group.
