Have you wanted to join a sports team in high school but you weren’t quite sure where to begin? Well, the HHS girls tennis team might be the fit for you! The team is currently looking for new members to be able to play in the 2026-2027 fall sports season. Without new members, the team is at risk for not being able to play in the county next year. No experience is needed to join the team as Coach Just will be able to teach you everything you need to know during the season’s practices in order to play in matches. Besides this, equipment can also be provided to you if you are unable to find your own to purchase. The team is low stakes, and encourages anyone interested in the sport to join in on their fun practices and exciting matches!
To join the tennis team, you can register through the Hawthorne Schools website under the Hawthorne High School “Athletics” section, which then holds the link to the “Arbiter Registration.” No experience is needed to join, and all beginners are welcome! Besides this, be sure to complete a sports physical before the end of the 2025-2026 school year and turn it in to the Main Office or athletic director. If that isn’t possible for you to do in that time frame, you are also able to turn in your physical in the summer, just ensure that it is in before August when practices start.
Practices are 5 days a week starting in the beginning/middle of August, and run until the season’s end in early November. Besides this, near the middle of the season the County Girls Tennis Tournament occurs, meaning that the team gets to travel to compete in matches against other county teams in either Wayne Hills or Wayne Valley (year dependent) during school hours! It is guaranteed to be a fun field trip during the tennis season and you can learn more information about it once the event nears.
The tennis team also has fun traditions that they partake in throughout the season as well. Senior night is always big where younger tennis team members decorate the courts and lockers for the senior members before their last home match at the end of the season. Besides this, last year the team also held a spirit week with themes that included “Anything but a Tennis Racket”, “Culture Day”, “Pajama Day”, and more! After big wins or achievements the team also holds pizza parties during practices as well. If you join you are guaranteed to have a good time!
If you would like updates as to what you should do before the sports season begins, be sure to follow the official HHS tennis instagram account for all the information you need to know. Besides this, feel free to ask some of the current players on the tennis team if you have any questions regarding how to join or about team dynamics. The tennis team is excited to welcome new members onto the team next school year, and they hope to see you all in the fall!
