Buffalo, New York received approximately six feet of snow beginning on Tuesday, November 16, leaving 13 people dead, dozens stranded, and thousands of lives disrupted. According to Usatoday.com,Rich Tobe, Deputy County Executive of Buffalo, said about 400 vehicles were trying to plow and clear the roads. The main cause of this storm was the amount of lake-effect snow. Lake-effect snow is when a mass of cold air moves over a body of warm water, and the air picks up the moisture. As a result clouds build over the lake and develop into snow. “While the second round of lake-effect snow may not be as long lasting, nor as intense, winds may be much stronger this time” said Elliot Abrams, AccuWeather meteorologist.
Governor Andrew Cuomo said, “It is an extraordinary event.” Some people weren’t able to leave their houses and if they did leave was a major risk. Some more worries will occur when the snow comes to a stop and it will melt resulting in flooding. Future weather reports show that Buffalo is now expecting heavy rains.
