United Airlines Controversy

Planning to go on vacation over summer break this year? Well before booking your flight, you may want to reconsider United Airlines. On April 11th at O’Hare International Airport, a Kentucky doctor named, Dr. David Dao was violently forced to get off the plane when there was not enough seats left for employees.

It all began with an overbooked flight heading towards Louisville. With no seats available for employees working the flight, United then offered passengers $800 to depart the plane for a later time. However, no one volunteered and this led to United having to turn to the Department of Transportation procedures. When four passengers were randomly selected to depart the plane, three of the people had left, except for Dr. Dao. He refused to give up his seat when he needed to attend to his patients.

Trying to convince United that it was important that he arrived on time for his patients waiting for him in Louisville, Chicago Police appeared at the scene. The police dragged Dr. Dao off the plane, that led to Dr. Dao enduring serious injuries. Another passenger on the same flight, took a video of police forcibly and violently removing Dr. Dao from the plane. The video was quickly posted to social media and that immediately caught people’s attention.

Many sympathized for Dr. Dao and were disgusted with the way United  handled the situation. The CEO of United Airlines, Oscar Munoz, stated, “Like you, I continue to be disturbed by what happened on this flight and I deeply apologize to the customer forcibly removed and to all the customers aboard.” While people are still outraged of the incident, many feel that Munoz is working towards resolving this issue to ensure that this will never happen again.

Today, Dr. Dao is recovering from the incident. While Dr. Dao and his family are appalled by United’s actions, they are said to be focusing on Dr. Dao’s medical needs. This occurrence was not only upsetting to Dr. Dao, but many others to see that this type of treatment still exists in the world today. The CEO of United Airlines takes full responsibility for this issue and will continue to improve the company to prevent this conflict from ever occurring again.
