The Invisible Children’s March

The Invisible Children is a group of people whose mission is to make a difference in the world and make the public know what is going on in the world. Invisible Children advocates the spreading of the name “Joseph Kony,” not to make him famous, but to get people aware of who he is and why he should be stopped.

“Kony 2012” a YouTube video released March 5, 2012 had 446,139 views and 334,464 likes in only three days. This video is a 30-minute long documentary explaining who the Invisible Children group is and who Joseph Kony is. Joseph Kony is a war lord in Africa who kidnaps children and uses them for war or sex. He forces the children to join his army and sometimes kill their own parents. Also, he increases his Lord’s Resistance Arm (LRA) by using these children and kidnaps more every day.  After watching the video and reading stories and comments and watching other videos, I wanted to also help make a difference.

There are many speculations of fraud, like the one noted in the U.K. Telegraph and reported by the Los Angeles Times in which Fred Opolot, Ugandan government spokesman, said:  “It is totally misleading to suggest that the war is still in Uganda. I suspect that if that’s the impression they are making, they are doing it only to garner increasing financial resources for their own agenda.”

However, I do not think that Invisible Children could be a fraud. Letting people know what is going on to help bring about a change is a good idea.

In the video, Jason Russell, Co-Founder of Invisible Children Inc., raises a few good points. First, he says the reason why nothing is being done to stop Joseph Kony or other most-wanted criminals is because 99 percent of people do not know who he is. He also said if this happened in the United States that this would be all over the news, so he wonders why is it not news in Africa.

To me, Invisible Children is making a stand so changes can occur. If it was just any one who made this group it probably would not have been spreading the message as quickly as it has. But because Invisible Children has already tried to change things on its own and even put in the video a method which could possibly stop theses criminals, it makes me believe that they can reach their goals.

This video is not only for Americans. The video comments are from people all over the world who are showing their support for Invisible Children. I think it is great that everyone can show they care and fight for a cause together–especially since the majority of followers for Invisible Children are young adults and teens.
