Senior Option has been a program at Hawthorne High School that let seniors leave school before period 8. I myself have the senior option and really like it because I get to go home early and take a nap before work, and then I am not tired the rest of the day. However, next year this option will not be available. “As of May 23, 2012 there will be no senior option,” guidance counselor Jennifer Basilone said.
I really don’t like that idea because it’s not fair to the seniors who aren’t in the work study program where students leave school early to go to work. Now, seniors will still have to stay in school even though they have taken all the required classes to graduate. Also, students who do have jobs now can’t get out of school early to get to work earlier.
“Although I would not be partaking in the senior option,” said junior Adam Kahn, “regardless of whether it was present or not, I still firmly believe it is a great opportunity for students trying to make money and get a feel for what the job market and certain careers are like, which can be beneficial if one is paying for college, a car, or a myriad of other things.”
I agree that HHS should not get rid of senior option because it really helped me out when I needed to leave school early for something important.
