Liam’s Corner: Batman Is Bad At His Job

Liam Duffy, Staff Writer

Batman has been known as one of the greatest comic book superheroes in history for a long time.

Since the 1940’s, he was known to be the world’s best detective, the dark knight, and the man who invented the Bat Suit. However, once you get past all the capes and batarangs, you see that Batman is not very good at his job as a crime fighter. He constantly learns nothing from his encounters and proceeds to let villains (with more power) get away scot-free. Batman even punishes sympathetic criminals who ended up like this because of the way society is. They could be rehabilitated or redeemed, but Batman continues to treat them like animals because he only cares about himself and his vanity.

He also ignores the crimes of the government and their shady underlings. Batman knows what they are doing, but chooses to focus on the street thugs and mobs rather than take down the most evil ones who are in power, politicians. In comics, the government is responsible for most of the problems caused in the superhero community. One, they are constantly trying to control superheroes and resort to making deals with criminal organizations to get superpowers themselves. Two, government officials are all corrupt and keep trying to get rid of the heroes when they have saved the world many times.

Unfortunately, Batman is so blinded by his beliefs that he lets those much more powerful than him get away with their crimes due to his ego and incompetence. Superman is better at his job than Batman. He came from humble beginnings and only kills the criminals who will not change their ways, or cross the lines like bombing a city or starting a war. American soldiers go to war and kill their enemies, why not superheroes when the time is desperate and there are no other peaceful solutions to use? I am just saying, Batman is a toxic hero to praise because he constantly screws up all the time and lets villains get away to deal with his grief.

He is a man-child who refuses to move on from his parents’ death and uses his superhero status to make himself feel better and like he is a messiah. He is not a god or a hero, because he keeps protecting the cycle of terror going on in Gotham, in order to keep feeling needed. Other heroes have lost their parents too, but they do not let innocent citizens continue to suffer just to make themselves feel great or to push their poor morals onto others. That is why Batman is a bad hero, and why DC should make him have a realization arc in order to redeem his character.
