The Phone Caddies: The Problem (An Opinion)

The Phone Caddy

Although we have been in school for multiple weeks at this point, a relatively new policy that has been put in place is creating quite the stir. Everyone can’t stop talking about “this new thing.” You know it, you hate it, it’s the phone caddies. I think I shouldn’t state the obvious, but I might as well. Nobody really likes the phone caddies except for a handful of teachers. Here’s why we need to get rid of them.

Let’s imagine the worst case scenario. It’s not a drill and there is an actual fire in the building. The school wants us to simply walk out the door in an orderly fashion. Realistically, everyone is going to be running for their lives. The biggest problem now though is that people are going to be crowding around the phone caddies to grab their phones and go. Even during fire drills people are still crowding the caddies. That’s probably one of the biggest problems.

A big problem, but not as big as a fire hazard, is people stealing your phone. It’s another scenario that I hope nobody has to go through. But, who is going to stop someone from taking your phone? It’s simply there for the taking for anyone.

Interestingly, some teachers were using the phone caddies before it became an official rule this year.

This teacher had a system in his class where if you were caught with your phone out then it goes in the caddy. That system worked well.

There are probably a lot more problems with the phone caddies that I haven’t touched on. But in conclusion, the phone caddies may seem like a good idea on paper; but they weren’t really a good idea whilst being used.
