What It Is Like To Be a High School Teacher

The New Teacher

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a high school teacher?

As a high school student, I mostly wonder if they really enjoy being a teacher. I can’t really answer that question, so I asked two of my teachers their opinion on being a teacher.

First I asked my ELA teacher, Mr. Cao. Mr. Cao is a freshman class adviser as well as an English teacher. Mr. Cao just started at Hawthorne high school, he has worked with kids for a number of years, but mostly worked with ages 3-13.

Mr. Cao says he loves being a high school teacher so far, he enjoys listening to the students and watching them grow into young adults.

Mr. Cao was mostly excited on his first day of teaching, but also explains that it was a little awkward being that he had never really worked with teenagers before. He also went on to say that overall the transition from being a student-teacher to a full-time teacher was pretty easy thanks to all of his coworkers, mentor teachers, and the administration here at Hawthorne High School.

The second teacher I interviewed was Ms. Ambrogio. Ms. Ambrogio has worked at Hawthorne High School for 8 years now and she is a graduate of this school as well.

Ms. Ambrogio teaches art and also coaches volleyball. Ms. Ambrogio described her first day teaching at HHS as if it was our first day of school: she was excited, but just a little scared because she was in charge of a bunch of teenagers.  Ms. Ambrogio takes pride in building relationships with her students and is most happy when helping her students bring their projects to life.

Overall I think it can be stressful to be a teacher, but in my teachers’ opinions,  I think they really enjoy their jobs. There can be so many pros and cons of being a teacher, but these teachers take pride in their jobs everyday and I think the least us students can do is appreciate our teachers: because if it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be where we are right now and we are very lucky to come to school everyday and get an education.
