School staff and parents have become concerned with the amount of phone and airpod usage in schools. They believe it is distracting students from their academics and causing their attention spans to become shorter. However despite these negative viewings, the usage of electronics has actually proven to help students focus and motivate them to complete their work. It is healthy for students to have a balance of work and phone time.
The phone usage allows the brain to release dopamine and even serotonin. Dopamine allows the body to feel a sense of pleasure, satisfaction and relief. Serotonin is a similar feeling which makes a person feel confident, respectful and loyal. These are both positive feelings and the time a student spends on their phone can allow them to take a break and reset mentally. This means they can complete their work properly with maximum effort. Many students participate in sports, work, after school activities and clubs. This means most of their free or downtime is taken up by being at school. After a long period of time this exhausts students and begins to drain them. These students desperately look for an outlet to help them recharge. Which is why any amount of time they have on their phone can actually be beneficial.
Students find that watching videos or even listening to music relaxes them and they are able to do their work more efficiently. In my personal opinion I believe the school phone usage is not an issue. I use my phone in school the majority of time while still paying attention to lessons, keeping high grades and maintaining sports. I do at times find that my phone can be quite distracting but this phone “privilege” as many like to call it, helps me practice self control and learn to have a healthy balance between working and scrolling.
Every person has a different way of learning and sometimes students prefer to study at home instead of school. I feel as long as the students grades are keeping up with academics properly, phones should not be an issue. It is unfair that many students are not allowed to have their phone in school because others around them are not using the time correctly. I think allowing students to use their phone in school during class helps teach them balance and self control which is a skill many will need in college when given more freedom.
