In today’s world, most things are gas powered, like cars and factories. Factories help with the world’s mass production of items. To make room for factories, we tend to deforest areas, which hurts our ecosystem.
Coltura.org is a non-profit organization which is trying to accelerate the switch from gas power to electric power. Coltura said “The average U.S. driver purchases 522 gallons of gasoline per year, adding 5.22 tons of carbon dioxide to our atmosphere.” Carbon dioxide is an essential element in a balanced ecosystem, but human activities are causing an imbalance in the atmosphere which becomes harmful and a pollutant. ,
Some air pollutants help with the acceleration of climate change. Greenhouse gases, Black Carbon, and Ozone, are some that trap heat.
Earth.org stated, “Our oceans absorb about 30% of carbon dioxide that is released into the Earth’s atmosphere.” Previously stated, human activities are increasing the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. The ocean continues to absorb the excess carbon dioxide but it increases the oceans acidification levels. The increase in acidification tends to harm the underwater ecosystems. With the increase coral reefs are being harmed and it hurts the wildlife under the ocean. If the ocean’s acidification continues to increase then the ecosystem will have irreversible changes.
Another big issue with the world currently is climate change, specifically the increase in heat. The increase in heat causes the ice caps to melt, which causes the sea levels to rise, which creates another global issue. If sea levels continue to rise, some places like Florida will be submerged, which lowers the overall amount of land mass of the United States.
There are many more terrible things that are hurting our environment, but what can we do to prevent any future harm? One thing we can do is switch our home’s energy source. Solar panels help with the change, they last for about 25-30 years, and over this life span they can save you about $20,000-$100,000. Changing to solar panels can reduce your carbon footprint by about 1,5 tons, said the United Nations.
Switching to an electric vehicle would also help the environment. It would prevent excess carbon dioxide from being spewed out into the atmosphere. Previously stated, excess carbon dioxide is quite harmful to the environment. It pollutes our air, but it also pollutes our oceans.
There are many other things we can change that will help out the environment. Specifically, switching to pure electricity is a main one which can help the environment. The only question is…what will you do?
