Many peers of mine seem to think that grades do not accurately measure our intelligence. I agreed with them and decided I needed to do some research on the subject.
Sciencedirect.com says “Intelligence is the strongest predictor of academic achievement” meaning that your grades do show at least somewhat of a correlation with how smart you are. It also says that tests are what is mainly used to determine your intelligence.
There are other factors that have to do with grades. Like a student’s work ethic: if a student is intelligent, but is quite lazy and doesn’t do some assignments, then they won’t have the best grades, and their grades will be low.
psycNet.org says “This confirms that cognitive ability is the strongest single predictor of scholastic achievement, though it is far from the only factor.” Which supports the argument made in the previous paragraph. Also, it shows that brain function does in fact have a correlation with grades in school.
In conclusion, grades definitely do have at least some correlation. While it does not show all of your intelligence like emotional intelligence and what some people say are “street smarts”, it estimates your intelligence to a pretty accurate level.
