Memorial day is a 24 hour federal observance holiday held within the U.S in memoriam and honor of the U.S military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
For Memorial Day, many, if not all U.S schools are closed for the last monday of May. For most people, especially kids still in school, this is seen as a kick off to summer where beaches open and many outdoor activities are opening up. And although that’s all fun, it shouldn’t mean we forget the true meaning of Memorial day.
Memorial day is a time to honor the fallen. Whether you have family or know of someone who has passed in wars, conflicts, and even while serving in peacetime, this is the time to take off your hats and honor them. It is an opportunity for Americans to pause, reflect on the sacrifices of our military personnel, and remember the families left behind.
Memorial Day brings people together to share a common purpose of remembering and honoring our heroes. It’s often observed through visits to cemeteries, placing flowers and flags on graves, and participating in parades and ceremonies.
The holiday was officially recognized in 1971 then in 2000, Congress passed the National Moment of Remembrance Act, designating 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day as a time for prayer and reflection.
As we see another Memorial day, we can take the time to reflect and honor those who have fallen and those who still serve our country. Have a happy Memorial day, and stay safe, you and your families.
