With only a few games left, Hawthorne High School’s varsity bowling team is finishing up the 2013 season strikingly.
The team currently is ranked third in the league. HHS bowlers shut out opponents such as Mary Help of Christians Academy, Rutherford, Garfield, and Manchester. They beat all of those teams 5 to 0, which means they received two points for winning each of the two games and then an additional point for winning the series overall. Their only losses were against Pompton Lakes and Glen Rock. This successful record has launched the team towards State qualification where they are expected to do well. “The team is doing much better this year than we did last year,” claimed Daniel Chatten, a senior on the bowling team. Chatten has been having an outstanding season and even bowled a 243 in one of his games where the highest score you can have is a 300.
Another senior on the team, Ian Cabello, noted that he has been very happy about this season so far, and the team definitely earned all of its wins. When asked to describe bowling in one adjective, Cabello said “fun.” Fun seems to be the overall attitude of this successful team. Cabello bowled a 255 against Garfield which resulted in a 437 series, which is two games made up of 600 points. One of the highest scores of the season was bowled by Ian Bruinooge who is only a freshman. He bowled a 499 series in the first game of the season.
The season is quickly drawing to a close and the odds of making States looks good for Hawthorne High School’s very own varsity bowling team. The team needs to just keep up the hard work and not spare any losses.
