Basketball Game Student Sections
February 7, 2017
For the past three home basketball games, Hawthorne High School has put together a ‘student section’ for the fans to sit and cheer on the varsity boys basketball team together. A student section is a closed off area of the bleachers for the students to express their pep and pride for our team. Student sections have been around in the past at HHS, but they were not nearly as involved as this year’s, and everyone wants to be involved. Hawthorne can thank Coach Chris Warner and a dedicated group of the senior boys, who have created a new spirit among the student section. To recognize how well our basketball team has been doing, the boys took to Twitter to recruit multiple students who wanted to dress under one theme and cheer on the team.
Several meetings and rehearsed cheers later, the new and improved student section hosted a White Out on January 26, 2017. Hawthorne student made their school spirit very clear as they yelled and cheered all game long. The boys ended up winning that game 46-41. Cheers from the student section were heard all throughout the gym. It was an immense hit, and the section has gotten larger at every game since. The next game the students brought their pep to was the game versus Lodi, where the students dressed all in black and, once again, were the loudest people in the gym. The boys won that game also, with a score of 68-50.
The most recent game played was the county game home against Passaic, where the student section had a pajama party to support the players. The student section got so into the game, they got the fans from Passaic up on their feet too. They actually had to stop the game to quiet down the excitement before they could continue playing. The game proved to be one to remember, and the boys won their first county game with a score of 65-50.
Coming up on Tuesday, February 7, is a home game against Eastern Christian. The student section is prepared to participate in one of the last home games of the season. Our theme is neon, so students can come dressed in their brightest attire and bring their good sportsmanship!
