The Dallas Cowboys- Pride and Joy of Texas
January 7, 2020
The city of Dallas was granted an NFL franchise on January 28, 1960. The team was first known as the Dallas Steers and then the Dallas Rangers. In order to avoid confusion with the American Association Dallas Rangers baseball team, the name was changed to the Cowboys on March 19, 1960.
The Cowboys ended their first season with a record of 0-11-1. Throughout 1965-1969 the Cowboys had their first taste of success. Then in 1970 lead by quarter back, Craig Morton, the Cowboys had a 10-4 season. They also had their first Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl V, but lost 16 to 13 to the Baltimore Colts.
During the 1971 season they moved from the Cotton Bowl to Texas Stadium. They made it to Super Bowl VI lead by Rodger Staubach who was the MVP quarterback. They crushed the Miami Dolphins 24-3. At this point in time the Cowboys were becoming very popular in both Dallas and nation wide. Under coach Tom Landry the Cowboys doomsday defense was a dominating force and their offense was well executed and fun to watch.
The Dallas Cowboys were leading the way in many areas. They were the first to use computers in scouting. They were also the first to have a modern cheer-leading squad that performed choreographed routines. Finally they were the first to broadcast their games in Spanish.
Although Pittsburgh won more Super Bowls in the 1970s, Dallas was considered the glamour team of the decade. The Cowboys super victory happened in 1977 when they defeated the Denver Broncos 27 -10. It was Super Bowl XII and two players from the Cowboys were Super Bowl MVP’s: Randy White and Harvey Martin.
From 1970 through 1979 the Cowboys were a dominating force winning 105 games which was more than any other NFL franchise. The Cowboys did not win another Super Bowl until 1992 when they crushed the Buffalo Bills 52 to 17 in Super Bowl xxvii. Troy Aikman was named MVP after completing 73.3 percent of his passes for 273 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Then in 1993 The Cowboys won their 4th Super Bowl when they once again beat the Bills 30 to 32. That season the Cowboys sent a record 11 players to the Pro Bowl. The Cowboys skipped a year and won their next Super Bowl in 1995 beating the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In the year 2009 the Cowboys were in their 50th season and first season in AT&T Stadium. It was in May of that year that the Cowboy’s Stadium was completed in Arlington, Texas.
The Dallas Cowboys are a pioneering team because they have lead the way in the NFL for other teams. Through the years they have helped to make football a fun and exciting game for all football fans.
