Washington’s NFL Team Changes Their Name To “Commanders”
February 8, 2022
18 months after dropping their name, the Redskins, the Washington Football Team was searching for a new and permanent name. They finally announced their new name on Wednesday. It is ‘The Commanders’ in tribute to Washington’s military ties.
The announcement was made live on NBC’s “Today” show and on social media and was followed with a media event at FedEx Field with owners Daniel and Tanya Snyder and team president Jason Wright.
Before they changed their name the team was getting a lot of criticism and there were many protests over their old name, “The Redskins.” The name was considered racist and offensive to many people…especially to Native Americans.
The team also changed their logo. The “Commanders” new logo is a big W. With the “W,” the team is emphasizing its roots in the Washington region. It plays its home games in Maryland and the team is headquartered in Virginia, but it saw most of its success in the District of Columbia.
Many people reacted differently to the name change. Some people like it while others think it was unnecessary for them to change it and that it should have stayed the way it was.
