Slam Dunk Contest 2022: An Opinion

This year’s dunk contest has been a let down!

There were many missed dunks…and the dunks that were shown, weren’t that impressive. The entire dunk contest was on Shaqtin’ A Fool which is a television show dedicated to making fun of mistakes, funny moments and silliness in the NBA. Shaquille O’Neal,  who is a notorious slam dunk contest fan, has expressed his displeasure with the NBA dunk contest. Many other famous NBA legends have expressed their negative feelings about the dunk contest as well.

The people participating in the contest were not at fault. I believe that the reason for being so unimpressed with the dunk contest is because we have 24 hour access to our phones.

We see all the impressive dunks and other highlights from professional dunkers who spend hours at a time only working on dunks and not perfecting their shot or dribble like the people in the NBA do. The dunk contest has not put a superstar into the dunk contest for a while and the last time someone in the dunk contest averaged 20 points or more was in 2018 when Donovan Mitchell averaged 23 points.

I feel the presence of multiple superstars in one dunk contest would be more entertaining for fans: Imagine Giannis Antetokounmpo, Ja Morant, Joel Embiid and other superstars in one dunk contest… now that would be very entertaining.

There is also the problem of the Dunk contest becoming repetitive because any dunk you could think of probably has been done…people are considering getting rid of the dunk contest and creating an exciting and new game.
