Modern football originated in North America in the late 19 century.
The history of American football was traced back to rugby football. One of the earliest forms of football was played at the Rugby School in England in the early 1800s, and the game was called “Rugby Football.” It was played with a ball that could be kicked or carried. This game eventually made its way to America, where it was modified to include more rules and regulations.
In 1869, Rutgers University and Princeton University faced off in the first intercollegiate football game in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This game was played with a round ball and was a combination of both soccer and Rugby Football. The game had a soccer style play with rules adapted from the London Football Association.
However, it wasn’t until the 1880s that American football began to take its modern form. Over the next few decades, football continued to evolve and grow in popularity, with the first professional football league, the American Professional Football Association, being formed in 1920. The league was later renamed the National Football League (NFL) in 1922, and it remains the premier professional football league in the United States today.
The first super bowl was played at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1967. Super Bowl I marked the first time that the NFL and AFL champions faced off in a championship game, and it became the blueprint for what would eventually become the biggest annual sporting event in the United States.
