The Hawthorne High School Boys Soccer Team finished the season with a record of 6-9, finishing 4th in the NJIC Colonial league. The Bears played another season under Ryan McMann as their head coach. He is experienced and had high hopes for the team this year.
The Bears opened the season with a loss to their crosstown rivals Hawthorne Christian Academy and starting their season off 0-1. Coming off of the loss the Bears then faced Palisades Park in a wet and rainy environment. This led to the Bears getting their first overtime win this season. The HHS Boys then had two tough games back to back against Glen Rock and Pompton.
The Bears also had one of their captains, Dylan Hansen, go down with a shoulder injury. The team was now at 1-3 overall on the season, but they had some light at the end of the tunnel.
The team scored a combined 8 goals in the span of three games with one of those games being a county tournament win against West Milford. After these three straight wins the team had some momentum with their captain Dylan Hansen also coming back. The team did lose another captain, the starting Goalkeeper Sami Maali, when he went down with a concussion.
Sitting at 4-4 after a loss to New Milford the Bears had a very tough schedule of games including a county game against Wayne Valley. The boys ended up going 0-4 in the last 4 games putting them at 4-8 on the season.
The Bears did not let it bring them down and they won their next 2 games against Butler which was senior night, and Eastern Christian. With some good momentum the Bears had to play Emerson Boro in the first round of the NJSIAA Tournament.
After a loss in their final game of the season the Bears finished off with a record of 6-9. The HHS Boys Soccer Varsity team will continue to grow and continue to get better in the coming years. Congratulations to Coach McMann, and all of the seniors: The Clarion staff hopes that the future treats you well.
