Through the first 10 weeks of this years NFL season, the New York Giants are tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the worst record in the league at 2-8. This means that they now hold the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. The Giants are looking awful this season, as they just lost 20-17 to the Carolina Panthers in Germany. The Panthers were widely known as one of the worst teams in the NFL, which is not a good look for the Giants as the Panthers outplayed them on all levels in their matchup.
Despite the losing record, Giants head coach Brian Daboll hasn’t been taking the blame for their poor start to the season. Giants fans all over the world are quick to point fingers at one man, and one man only. This man is their 27 year old starting quarterback and team captain, Daniel Jones.
The clock is ticking for former first round pick Daniel Jones, as he has yet to deliver the quarterback play that this Giants organization has been looking forward to for the past 6 years. Jones recently signed a 4 year $160,000,000 contract with the Giants, leaving New York fans in shock. There was no reason for New York to negotiate this big of a deal with their quarterback, especially since he has yet to show any flashes of greatness throughout his career.
Losing is The New Winning: The Giants are not in an ideal position to make a run at anything this year. Their team has shown flashes of talent, but not enough to give them a winning record. They would need to win out to even have a chance of making the playoffs. The more games that this young team wins would ultimately cause their position in the draft to take a hit. Losing games for this Giants team might be better in the long run, due to the fact that their pick in the 2025 NFL draft would be higher.
Last year, the Giants feasted in the draft, as there 2024 draft class looked like one of the best in the league. They first selected WR Malik Nabers out of LSU in the first round, which was a massive pick for the organization. Nabers has been playing lights out, despite the team’s poor quarterback play. Other rookies like Tyrone Tracy, Andru Phillips, and Tyler Nubin have also been big additions for the franchise this year. This shows that the Giants are capable of drafting talented players wherever they select.
If the Giants want things to change, they should look into selecting a quarterback with their first round pick next year. If big blue ends the season with a record bad enough for a top 5 pick, they could look into finding a replacement for Daniel Jones in the 2025 NFL draft. There are many quarterbacks that equally sit high on the draft board, but New York’s GM Joe Schoen needs to make the right decision.
The Future is Bright: There’s a handful of quarterback prospects that are worthy of a top 10 pick in next years draft. These quarterbacks include Cam Ward (Miami), Shedeur Sanders (Colorado), Jalen Milroe (Alabama), and Quinn Ewers (Texas). Out of these four quarterbacks, there will ultimately be one that stands out as the best option after next year’s NFL Combine. Deciding which one is the best fit for the Giants, will be in the hands of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen.
The Giants could have an interesting roster next year if they select the right quarterback in next year’s draft. Starting WR Malik Nabers and RB Tyrone Tracy will both be going into next year with great rookie seasons the year prior. New York’s defense will also improve, despite the fact that they are already looking strong as of late.
The New York Giants could be a quarterback away from a winning record next season, and even a playoff spot. The NFC East is a tough division to play in, but New York could easily shock the league next year with a deep playoff run. This only starts in this upcoming offseason, as the Giants front office needs to make good decisions that will only cause the team to improve from here.
