Lindsey O’Boyle, Hawthorne High School senior, has chosen to take a high school class that will give her not only priceless opportunities but also four college credits from Fairleigh Dickinson University. O’Boyle is a student in the new program called Tomorrows Teachers, which she says has helped her tremendously by allowing her to get a feel for this field.
O’Boyle says she has gotten a lot out of this class. The program allows students to experience what it is like to be in the classroom in a teacher’s role. It teaches various styles of teaching that may or may not work. It also teaches future teachers how to handle misbehaving students. Students in this high school class are learning lessons many people don’t get to experience until college.
O’Boyle was asked what made her decide that she wanted to pursue a career in teaching. She answered saying that teaching wasn’t her first option until high school. However, past teachers have taught O’Boyle in a way that inspired her and made her want to inspire future students the same way.
O’Boyle has shadowed classes while being a part of this program. “I’ve shadowed both Mr. Corvo and Mr. Kenny. Watching classes at two different age levels allows me to see how different age groups behave.” Generally, while shadowing a class, O’Boyle helps teachers grade and check work.
Michael Ennis, Tomorrows Teachers advisor, had only positive things to say about O’Boyle. Ennis says that she is a rising star and brings a lot to the program. “Like all students,” Ennis said, “Lindsey is only missing experience, and the Tomorrows Teachers program offers this experience. There’s no doubt that she will be a terrific educator. She possesses exemplary interpersonal and leadership skills.”
