A new student teacher, Casey Flynn, joined the Hawthorne High School (HHS) staff on January 21, 2013.
The student teacher, who is apprenticing under Cheryl Smith, has been teaching various math courses at HHS. Even though Flynn arrived only a few months ago, she has already taken over full responsibility of teaching Smith’s SAT Math and Algebra I classes. Furthermore, she said that before she leaves on May 17, 2013 she will start independently teaching Smith’s Pre-Calculus Honors class.
When asked how it was working with Smith, Flynn responded, “She’s a great cooperating teacher. She’s very helpful and makes the experience enjoyable.”
In the few months that Flynn has been here, she revealed that HHS has treated her very well. She described the students as “very opening and compliant to everything.” Flynn added that if HHS offered her a teaching position, she would gladly accept.
Flynn admited she knew she wanted to be a math teacher when she was in eighth grade because math was always her favorite subject. Her favorite areas of math were calculus, statistics, and algebra. If she was given the chance to choose what aspect of math to teach, she said she would love to teach Calculus BC, which is a review of Calculus AB in addition to some other topics such as parametrics and series according to College Confidential. HHS currently only offers Calculus AB.
Flynn is from Pompton Lakes, New Jersey and went to school at one of HHS’s rivals, Pompton Lakes High School. Flynn continued her education at Montclair State University.
“She is statistically significant,” said Cheryl Smith. “She has a probability value that’s more extreme than what’s observed.”
