Dan Serafin, (2002) graduated Rowan University in 2006 and is now a successful newsman for News12 The Bronx, News12 Brooklyn, and MSG Varsity in New York.
Each week, Serafin is a reporter for two days and an anchorman for three days, covering sports from high school, college, and professional sports–and loves every minute of it. “I do very much enjoy working here; in a way it’s a chance for me to come home. I get to cover the teams like Yankees, Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Giants, and Jets. Then all the local colleges like Fordham, Manhattan, LIU Brooklyn and hundreds of high schools. There really isn’t anywhere better to cover sports than in New York City,” Serafin said.
Serafin’s love of sports was an important part of his time at Hawthorne High School. He played four years of soccer, one year of basketball, and also played on a roller hockey team called the Sun Devils. Serafin was also in the SHARE club during his years at Hawthorne. “I have some fond memories of HHS…I’d like to think that I’m not old enough to forget high school yet! Of course it’s really the people you meet along the way who shape your experience and that’s what I remember. Not just my friends, but also the teachers like Ms. Atkinson who has recently left; she always told me she didn’t want to find out that I was working an office job when I grew up, and Mr. Hancock always carried himself with class and that was something I admired at the time,” said Serafin.
Serafin’s advice to the students of HHS comes from his own experiences: “I’ve learned that before you get exactly what it is you want, you’ll probably have to do a lot of stuff you don’t want to do,” said Serafin. “But you have to take advantage of every opportunity. In my business at least, that’s the only way to advance.”
