So Long to Well Read
March 11, 2016
Well Read (New & Used Books) will soon be closing. Located on Lafayette Ave., the bookstore has been a prime location for Hawthorne residents looking for books ranging from required school books to the latest bestsellers for leisure reading. The store opened November 1, 2010 and owners Bill and Maryann Skees quickly became part of the Hawthorne family.
The Hawthorne High School Creative Writing Club frequently crowded the store for special events including author visits, books signings, writing workshops, and the annual launch of the HHS literary magazine The Empyrean. Upon hearing the sad news of the store’s closing, the club members created a “thank you” poster showing photos through the years of their many Well Read events; the poster is now displayed in the store as it begins its Going-Out-Of-Business sale.
The inventory clearance sale continues throughout March. Starting March 13, everything in the store will be 20 percent off—new and used books, greeting cards, gifts, children’s puzzles, crafts and more. Additional sales and specials are planned throughout the month.
