Happy 2025! I’m sure in December 2024, the month before January, you were thinking of new year’s resolutions. As of right now, I hope your “New year new me,” thing is going well. But don’t get too upset if by the end of January the motivation of you trying to be the best version of yourself wears off. It’s normal. Almost half of all people quit working for their New Year’s Resolution near the end of January. Along with that, there are less than 10% of people achieving their goal during the year. Here’s why…
There are a number of reasons why we come up with New Year’s resolutions that end up leading us to failure before we have even started. It all starts with thinking too big and not being ready to change.
Thinking too big:
Here is what automatically goes wrong when trying to be the best version of yourself in the new year: A big change. It’s not that easy to physically make the change rather than how easy it is to verbally say you’re going to make the change.
Us humans are not made for a big and unexpected change. Changes happen when you are okay feeling uncomfortable. To see the results of your lasting change, you need to be in a huge state of discomfort for a while. Yes this sounds frightening, but the reason for this is because if you set goals that are really big, in reality, you could be in the steps you needed to take before getting to that state of feeling uncomfortable.
So, these big goals that we set won’t always happen immediately, it takes time. Sometimes you need to set smaller goals and more immediate goals that will eventually lead up to your big goal. To conclude, if we want to be able to meet our goal, we need to set smaller goals along the way to be able to succeed. This way we are able to ease ourselves by doing smaller changes rather than having such an overwhelming, sudden change that we hope to see the results in immediately.
Not being ready to change:
Another reason that leads to New Year’s resolutions failing is not being ready for a big change. Thinking too big really ties along with not being ready to change. If you’re not preparing right and setting smaller goals for your resolution, how will you be ready to make such a big change suddenly in your life?
Start with becoming aware that something may need to change. Then, think about making that change along with putting a plan together to make that change. Lastly, make that change and determine how you can stick along with it for the time being.
How to prevent failing these goals:
Here are 7 very effective tips to help prevent you from failing to succeed your resolution according to The Grio …
1. Study the problem
2. Be specific about your goals
3. Break it down
4 .Be nice to yourself
5. Adopt a learners mindset
6. Set up a support system
7. Be flexible
Overall, try not to set a goal that you are not prepared for. Even if you think you are and you’re not, look back and review the little things you need to do to work up to that big goal.
