Recently, the state of New Jersey made a new law about phones in schools. This rule says that students are not allowed to use their phones during school hours. Many people think that this is a good idea, but others disagree. This is an important topic because almost every student today has a cellphone, and this would be a huge adjustment for them.
One reason for the ban is that phones can be very distracting. When students are supposed to be listening to a teacher, they might be texting, playing games, or watching social media. This makes it harder for them to focus and understand the lesson. Teachers also have to stop class to tell students to put their phones away, which wastes time for the lesson.
However, some students and parents disagree with the ban. They argue that phones can be helpful for learning. Students can use them to look up information, take notes, or even use learning apps. Also, parents like being able to contact their child during the day in case of any emergencies. Students also feel safer knowing that they could contact their parents for help when needed, meaning that cellphones are more of a safety device than a distraction.
This being said, many current students here at HHS disagree with the ban for the same reasons. If something serious ever happened during the school day like a lockdown, medical problem or family emergency, students should have the right to use a cellphone. Waiting to use the office phone could waste time in an emergency and phones help students feel safe because they know they can contact someone. Because of this, banning cellphones completely is not the best idea.
Many students feel that there are other ways to limit cell phone use without banning them. Many schools this year have been using phone pouches or caddies. These have been very effective because they prevent cell phone use during class and students would still have their phones during free periods like lunch and study hall. Since they would still have their phones, contacting someone during emergencies would be an option.
These are reasons why this ban should be taken into consideration more carefully instead of just banning the phones.
