The Creative Writing Club unveiled the 2014-2015 Empyrean literary magazine at Well Read Bookstore on Thursday, June 4.

Students, family and friends gathered at the bookstore for a party, open-mic readings, and magazine unveiling. Also on on display were Empyrean magazines from past years (going all the way back to 1974), the Club scrapbook, and a computer monitor showing the online colorized edition of the magazine.

The Creative Writing Club, under the advisorship of Ms. Theresa DiGeronimo, collaborated with the Media Arts Department for the first time this year to enhance the design and layout of the magazine. Media Arts students Kaylee Seiders and Tyler Mooney took charge of the production. Isabel Arabian submitted her photograph for the cover design that represented the meaning of “empyrean,” which is: “the pure element of light or fire.” Throughout the year, club members wrote poems and short stories that they then workshopped at weekly meetings to strengthen their works through revisions and then submitted those works to be considered for publication.

In addition to publishing the high school’s literary magazine, the Creative Writing Club also sponsors the school-wide Poetry Day every April during which all students are engaged in various activities the focus on the joy of poetry. In this past year, the club had the opportunity four times to meet with published authors who shared their writing experiences and offered advice and guidance to the students on their own writing.

The Creative Writing Club is open to all students with a desire to write creatively and enjoy the company of like-minded peers.
